Organization Station, or Cats: Why I Can’t Have Nice Things

How do you keep your yarn wrangling organised?

I am equally shocked and thrilled to inform you that my stash is now superorganized. I am not, however, offering any photographic evidence of this organization because it's neither beautiful nor interesting. Space is at a premium in our apartment, so my stash is relegated to the coat closet. The yarns are organized in separate boxes by weight. You may be wondering: why the coat closet? May I present exhibit A:

and exhibit B:

These little monsters have MUST DESTROY YARN coded into their DNA. They live, eat, and breathe DESTROY YARN. DESTROY YARN gives meaning to their lives. Unfortunately we live in a 100 year old building with lots of old wood floors and doors and nothing closes properly. And thus I have to use bricks to hold the closet door shut.

Sigh. Life with cats = why I can't have nice things.

Finally, the picture at the top of this post is of the top of my dresser. This is a mostly cat-free zone. I say mostly because they all have the capability of getting up there, but do so only rarely. If you care to click through to flickr, there are notes detailing the various items.

  1. Aww. My cats don’t pay much attention to my yarn, but I still won’t leave things out. I would never risk it.

    Such cute kitties!!

I can say I have never had issues with any of my cats messing with my yarn. My dogs on the other hand have been known to have destroy a few hanks in their time.

That is so cute. Well, the cats are cute, but their penchant for eating yarn is not so cute. My cats haven’t developed a taste for yarn, yet, but the smallest one does enjoy perching on my lap while I’m knitting and falling asleep on my WIP, making it impossible to knit.

    These cats.

What would we do without them?

  4. Leo, you have such a nice blog. Your photos are very pleasing. I have 4! cats and really do know what you’re talking about.

  5. Those Brothers are bad news bears! I have one at home who seriously only has eyes for Rowan–any other yarn fails to ever register with him, but break out any Rowan AT ALL and he freaking loses his ever-loving mind. It’s weird.

this has nothing to do with yarn, only cats. ;-) a few years ago I cat sat for a friend and her cat came to live with me. I had bifold doors on the closets and the cat would nudge the doors open and hide amongst the stuff/clothes (no yarn at that time). I found myself becoming allergic to cats after that because that cat got so thoroughly into my clothes and stuff that what was previously a very minor allergy to cats took a bad turn. i=It took me several months before I could completely air it out. Cats get everywhere!

  7. I love your photos of the kitties. They are beautiful, but obviously they are cats therefore you are little devils. My cat is the same, but at the moment her attention is focused on a project bag which she has appropriated. I’m never getting that thing back, but at least she ignores my yarn (phew)

  8. Such sweet looking little monsters. :)

OMG! I’m totally going to get a brick for the closet in our dining room!

  10. Yeah this is why my yarn is in Rubbermaid bins that just sit out in the open in the 2nd bedroom. Also why my projects are always stashed on top a bookcase in the dining room.
