leo got a new pair of shoes

Sorry for terrifying the fellow Twin Peaks fans out there. Since my initials are LEO I like to say, every time I go shoe shopping, "LEO NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF SHOES!" Because really, what's more hilarious/horrifying than a joke about Leo Johnson.

Anyway, I actually did get a new pair of shoes and it was not at all terrifying. See, I've had some really super painful trouble with shin splints for the last little while, and it took longer than it should have for me to think, "gee, I really shouldn't have shin splints from jumping around in front of a workout video in my apartment, on a mat on a rug, in shoes." So I got myself some new shoes and finally got back on a treadmill at the gym today. And it was 50% encouraging and 50% discouraging that my run went really, really smoothly. Encouraging because, hey I took 2 months off and it's okay! Discouraging because, hey I haven't run for 2 months and I didn't get any worse so what is the point of even trying anyway!

I've honestly never been good at running in the slightest. I did the whole couch to 5k thing earlier this year and while I made it through the whole program I'm still not sure I could make it through a 5k race. Running is hard for me. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I get bored. I almost feel like a physical issue would be easier for me to work through than a psychological one, sometimes. At any rate, being able to watch whatever trashy television tickles my fancy at the gym really does help. Today Pop Up Video was on with a bunch of old pop/hip hop songs. Between the fun TV and the new shoes (SUCH GOOD SHOES) it felt pretty fabulous.

Crafting-wise I don't have a whole lot to report, mostly because I got a ton of good school work done today. There's nothing visually interesting or blog-appropriate about my schoolwork. It's just that a couple word files got that much longer. But I did at least contemplate some crafting. Remember this light blue crescent I posted yesterday?

Yeah that one. Epic failure. I ran out of yarn before I got to the end of the project (I wasn't entirely sure if I was starting with a whole skein or not - apparently I was not!) and tried to just make another part of it with a different yarn and yeahhhhh - no. So that thing sucked. So I wound up some new yarn to restart the same project. Hopefully in a couple days I'll have a little FO to show you. In the meantime, here's the yarn!

This is Romni Wools Wool Silk. They don't seem to have their own yarns listed on their web page, but this stuff is on ravelry here. A dear dear dear friend from Canada brought me a few skeins of this (or rather, two skeins of wool silk and one of what I believe is 100% wool?) a while back and it has sat in my stash for far too long. While I am almost never a fan of really delicate single ply yarns, this stuff is DIVINE. Or more precisely: I am hard on things (I'm basically an 8 year old boy) and because of that I have to choose projects wisely when working with delicate single ply yarns. But on the other hand, I am a complete whore for silk. I almost never use silk for garments because of its lack of elasticity, but I just cannot keep my hands off the stuff. I especially love the way it smells. I love the scent to the point that it's weird and creeps people out. I can smell if someone in the room with me is wearing an article of clothing containing silk. So it's fair to say I have kind of a crazy sense of smell, with a special thing for silk. At any rate, this Romni Wool Silk is realllllly loosely spun, and is incredibly fluffy and delicate. It's a dream to work with so far.

  1. I have a crazy sense of smell for natural gas. I can usually smell a leak a full day before gas leak sensors can detect it.

    I’ll trade ya?

ALSO YES running is just SO boring. Every stupid plodding step. Bore-ring.

  2. omg running is so so so boring. sorry, my sense of smell is pretty run of the mill. although i’m oddly sensitive to ether and used to smell/sense a leak before everyone one else when i worked in a lab. but that’s not really useful in the normal world unless someone is walking around with an ether soaked rag.

are those Saucony’s? I LOVE their running shoes. and i also have the same mental issue with running. although running outside does help with that. as does thinking about all the things i need to do later while I’m running. ;-)

  4. I find running to be super hard! You hear about this runners’ high. Is it a myth? I’ve never felt anything close to a high while I’ve been running! I’m really curious about Murakami’s What I Talk About When I Talk About Running though. Have you read it?
Nice one on the Romni! I’m looking forward to seeing how it knits up.

  5. I hate running, too, for exactly the same reason (also b/c if I run outside I am constantly worried that drivers are looking at me).
But really, my take away from this post is: Pop-Up Videos is still on? WHERE IS IT AND HOW CAN I WATCH IT?

  6. Yeah, I get so distracted when I run. I was doing really well about going to the gym earlier in the year, but now I must count it as an epic fail. I haven’t been in months.

  7. i also think the runner’s high is a complete myth. I’ve been starting and getting half way through couch to five k about 6 times this year. After the initial few times where I thought my lungs were going to explode after 4minutes of running, now I have a super tough time sticking it out, simply because I’m bored. No matter which music/podcast/bookontape I’ve got on my ipod- I’m bored out of my tree. I’d love to find someone locally at my level (ie. not a super-runner) to go out and run with. I’ve run with my partner a bunch of times, but his legs are too long and we both end up cranky (me running too fast for comfort and him too sIow). Somehow think that having a pacing buddy would make it easier. Any chance you want to move to Canada? :)
