I'm sharing my progress working through the Chain Reaction Afghan Project. It's been great fun so far to really expand my repertoire of crochet techniques. Each square in the blanket is designed by a different person using different techniques/skills, and is only 12x12", so I'm never bored.
This is my last post (for now!) on the Chain Reaction Afghan project! I only made half the squares for our store sample blanket (so, I did 10 and the other crochet teacher did 10) and this is the last of my bunch. I'm actually planning on making the other 10 squares and assembling them into a smaller lap blanket for myself, but I haven't made those yet. So this is my last pre-prepared Chain Reaction post. I can't believe I managed to stretch these out almost to the end of nablopomo!
Without further ado: Woven Arrowheads.
Although this square turned out really nice looking, I had a fair amount of trouble understanding the pattern. I get the impression the language used isn't as direct or concise as it could be, although since the square uses some techniques that aren't really standard I'm not sure how else I would have written it. It's a bit awkward to explain but it involves you making short chains and letting them dangle while working with the other color, twisting them together as you go. So I understood that part of the pattern, but what came after that was the most confusing. Basically you work a row of sc in the sc that attach those looping chains to the work. It makes sense when you're looking at the back of the square, but my God did I not understand that for the longest time.
If you look at the bottom of the picture of the square attached into the blanket (the one in the body of the post, as opposed to the more artsy lookin shot up top) you'll see that the border of the blanket looks like it's constructed in a similar way. That is because IT IS. You just make longer chains, use more colors, and twist them all together. It's a nice border and I'll have to keep it in mind for future blankets and other things that require borders!

Yeah, that border is pretty awesome. It almost looks like the bias tape binding on a quilt.
